Evolution - Story of each one of us - Part 2

After Ally took enough notes she said “Bob, I am done”. Bob immediately went to the center of the machine and started configuring the next target time and space. Bob turned towards Ally and said, “Get ready for the next wonder”. He turned back and locked the machine for the specified target. Time machine purred like a cat and flew like superman. In next few minutes, it again entered the light tunnel.

This time Ally was aware of the transition and she was not feeling sick. She went towards the window and watched as the light fibers raced backwards. It strangely reminded her of the night time shopping she would go with her friends. While they returned from shopping in their mini-ships, the led lights which decorated the freeway looked same as the light tunnel. Bob noticed her being casual this time and amusingly smiled at the fact that how fast she has adapted to the flight.

The ship began to slow down. Bob came running towards the window to see the remarkable birth of a planet. A Planet which carried the life’s essential oxygen. A Planet which was in just the right position which could contain water in liquid state. A Planet which sustained the first life in universe. A Planet which was later called as Earth. Bob expected a huge blast from sun and then the Earth to come out like a flaming heroin. But what he was seeing was nothing like that. On the surface of sun, there was a huge solar storm. A hot tongue from sun came out and hit like a whip. Due to that unexpected behavior, small dust particles which were around the sun were greatly disturbed. Even Bob was very disturbed. He thought he might have configured the wrong time. Ally seeing the confused reaction in Bob’s face, explained him that the Planets even though huge and in perfect orbit were once nothing but dust. What they are seeing now is exactly how earth was born. She said “Bob, carefully look at how these dusts and particles are disturbed. Look what the chaos is going to do”. Bob watched in awe as the dust particles merged together because of the disturbance, gravity and heat. Lot of dust particles collided and started form a big particle, which somewhat looked like an asteroid. Bob was still not convinced, as what he saw was not a planet. There were other planets, approximately fifteen of them. But none of them looked like an elliptical astronomic body. Bob was aware of the fact that there were more than ten planets when the solar system was formed and many of them were destroyed. Hence he was confused whether they were watching another planet. Maybe the asteroid is not Earth and another planet which got destroyed.

He explained his theory to Ally and Ally simply asked Bob to keep the space co-ordinate constant and move
the time to a further ten years. Bob was surprised to see the asteroid which formed before was now huge and can be easily called as a planet. “It’s a planet, I give it that, but an ugly one” he remarked to Ally. Ally started laughing and asked him to observe quietly. Now, he saw that the planet was more like a hot ball of dust. “This is how Earth was born Bob. Many dust particles collided and became into a huge ball of hot dust. Due to the gravity, gas on the newly formed planet was not able to escape. Heat on the planet, also caused various chemical reactions between the gas and luckily Oxygen, Carbon-di-oxide, Nitrogen, Water vapor, e.t.c, were formed. When earth started cooling down after Years of burning, the gas forms, started to condense and converted to liquid form. When earth is close to sun in the orbit, because of the heat from sun, water converted to water vapor again. Once earth was far enough, on the elliptical path, from sun, it condensed again. Like this, many times the condensation and evaporation happened. At one particular time lightning, struck water and miraculously the amino acids and various other proteins formed as a block together and gained conscious. This is what we call as ‘The first life form’. A simple single cell organism was the ancestor of all the life we have on earth here”. “Amazing Ally. You just know too much” Bob said. Ally replied, “Then what will you tell the person who thought and wrote all this? I am just a mediator Bob, Nothing else”. Bob smiled at her and asked “So are you ready for the next stop?”

In next few minutes of ‘their time’, Time machine landed on Earth. They landed near a river. There were many patches of small plants scattered near the river. Bob looked out for any possible impression they could cause and carefully came out from the ship on confirmation that they will not disturb anyone or any other living thing. Bob started refilling the oxygen tank and ally started to analyze the unique plant varieties. There were few insects which were buzzing around those plants. On seeing this, Ally said to Bob “Insects were the first living things to come out of sea Bob. Life first started on sea. From single cell which can only feel the surrounding to multiple cell organisms which developed five senses”. Bob looked at Ally and asked, “What do you mean by ‘only feel the surroundings’?” “When life first started on sea, the single cell organism had one motto. Reproduce. It split into many single cell organisms. But it was not enough to increase their number. Even though they split in a fast rate, they were killed by nature’s unstable environment. This data was passed to several of their generations; as a result the organism developed a defensive mechanism which helped it to feel the surrounding. The first sense. When it was able to feel the surrounding, it was also able to move and escape the harsh conditions in sea. But it was too tiring for it, since it had no energy to constantly move around. As time passed, it developed into multiple cell organisms, which can create their own energy from sun light. But to absorb sun light and create their own energy, they need to be near the sunlight. So they developed a sort of light sensors. It helped them to feel the presence of light and move near it. This was later developed as eyes. After this, the organisms started to utilize the abundant resource, the minerals in sea, around them and use it as a kind of catalyst to create energy. To absorb these minerals, it developed an opening on their body and later another to release the waste which is secreted in the process”. Bob gave a funny sound and started laughing at this point. Ally shook her head like asking “seriously dude?” and continued with her explanation. “But this took lot of unwanted minerals inside, so to selectively absorb the minerals, it developed a taste sensor. This is what we call as mouth now. At this point of time, there was a bacteria group called Cyanobacteria. These bacteria types were the most successful and we should be very thankful to them. They are the ones which started producing a lot of oxygen into atmosphere, through Photosynthesis.”

Bob asked, “Wait, so this is why Bill has asked not to park on earth before this time? So if we had parked, we would have died?” Ally nodded, “Precisely! Oxygen content was much less in atmosphere. Without this bacterium, evolution would have been very slow. This phenomenon is called as the ‘Oxygenation of atmosphere’. When the highly handy and famous catalyst called oxygen was available, evolution just jet started. But there was a sad untold incident Bob, did you know that there were organisms for which oxygen was toxic?” “Wait, what? Oxygen was toxic to organisms? What do you mean? Oxygen is important for living things right?” “Yes Bob, for us! But there were few organisms for which it was toxic and they all died because of this phenomenon. This was the first mass extinction on earth. If this did not happen, probably earth would have had a really different set of species.” “Ally, wait! I need some time to take this, and I also have to check the current machine condition.” Ally said, “Sure Bob, let me take some notes on these oldest new plants” and smiled. Ally went around and started taking notes while Bob sat on the staircase of machine and said to himself “All my life, was based on a lie”. Ally heard this and started laughing wildly shaking her head. Bob was little embarrassed and went inside the machine to check the current status.

After the work at the current place was over, Ally came inside and asked Bob whether they can move to the next time frame. Bob said, “Aye, Aye Captain” and the Machine landed near the top of a big mountain. This time Bob was even more careful, as there were bigger animals outside. Bob and Ally looked through the window of their ship. What they saw must be spell bounding, as they did not talk for several minutes and kept staring outside. “Is that a Rexosaurus Ally?” Ally turned towards Bob in slow motion and said “Are you serious? That is not even its real name. It is Tyrannosaurus. And by the way the dinosaur we are seeing now is herbivorous. Tyrannosaurus is a carnivorous.” Bob reacted sheepishly and gave a confused “huh?” Ally shrugged and said “Never mind, I will give you a virtual demo, for now all you have to know is this: The name of that dinosaur is Argentinosaurus. The biggest of dinosaurs.” Bob nodded his head understandingly.
As usual, Ally started giving her lectures on the Dinosaur evolution. “After the Oxygenation phenomenon, organisms which were inside the sea, started to develop at much faster rate. They developed back bone and came out of sea to use the abundant oxygen in atmosphere. These are later known as reptiles. Since the oxygen was too much, species evolved grown in much bigger size. Basically dinosaurs are nothing but the reptiles, which has grown into huge size because of the availability of oxygen.” “Well, that is something which I didn’t know Ally.” Ally remembered the Rexosaurus comment and gave him a menacing look. Bob turned away from Ally and told “Come Ally, enough with dinosaurs. We will go check our ancestors”. Ally angrily admired him from behind and started walking towards the machine.
